Renter-Friendly Christmas Decorating Tips

As a Saint Peters renter, you may be wondering how to decorate your home for the holidays. Luckily, there are several excellent ideas to build renter-friendly Christmas décor. By observing a few easy suggestions, you can make your rental home a cheerful space that is ready to celebrate the holidays with those you care about most.

One of the most iconic elements of Christmas décor is the fireplace mantel hung with stockings. But if your rental house doesn’t have a fireplace or a mantel, you can still use these elements in your holiday decorating. Think about renting a freestanding mantel from a local events company for a few weeks. When placed against a wall or in a corner of your home, you can then use it as a focal point for your holiday decorating.

If renting a mantel isn’t your best option, there are other creative ways to hang Christmas stockings in your home. For instance, if you have a bookshelf in your living room, you could use weighted stocking hooks to place Christmas stockings along the front edge of a shelf. Consider putting your Christmas stockings to the back of kitchen chairs with festive ribbons for a more personal touch. This way, they’ll cheer up your dining area and perhaps start a new holiday tradition. If chairs aren’t an option, another option would be to hang stockings directly on a wall using removable hooks. These hooks will hold your Christmas stockings securely but then come off after the holidays without damaging the paint. Finally, for the creative DIY-er, you could design a freestanding post with hooks that can be placed anywhere in your home.

Next to the mantel and stockings, the Christmas tree is a top décor item for many people. No matter how big or small your rental home may be, there are many creative ways to have a Christmas tree without all the cost and mess of a live tree. If you need to have a tree, consider investing in a small imitation evergreen tree. These little trees often come with lights already installed and can be placed on a tabletop. Simply add your favorite holiday ornaments and enjoy! On the other hand, if imitation greenery isn’t your favorite, consider using a houseplant as your Christmas tree instead! A large potted plant can be hung with fairy lights and small ornaments, creating a festive display that will live on after the holidays are over.

Flowers and fresh-cut greenery are also great options for renters who want to bring the sights and scents of the holidays into their home in a natural way. For instance, you can often find cut boughs of pine, cedar, or eucalyptus, all of which smell great and look beautiful arranged on shelves, mantels, and in vases. You could even add a small string of lights to create a beautiful glow to your arrangements. And don’t forget about poinsettias and other colorful winter plants. Those impressive red blooms can brighten any corner of a room and evoke bright holiday memories at the same time.

When decorating for the holidays, exterior décor can be another great way to add a festive touch to your home. For pretty, damage-free decorating, opt for simple seasonal touches. A festive doormat, a beautiful wreath, and seasonal window clings can all send warm holiday wishes to your friends and neighbors. To hang lights or garlands, go for temporary hangers that you can easily install and then remove. Or, get creative with some shiny ornaments and fishing line. Suspend bright ornaments from a window or door frames, tree branches, or other exterior features to create a dazzling winter display.
